…because I have a new dream sofa, guys. Huge news alert: after about a year and a half of long-distance dating (and more cross-country flights than I can ever begin to remember), my cute and kind boyfriend Dennis and I are making plans to turn my LA apartment into our LA apartment. (Ahhh!!!! Please drop any cohabitation tips in the comments, if you have them.) Our first order of business? Acquire a sofa or sectional that we can both simultaneously lounge on comfortably. (Den loves my current vintage leather number and thinks it’s more comfortable than I do – he’s definitely napped on it more frequently than I have! – but your girl is a SPRAWLER who’d prefer some space for both of us to lay down, you know?)
To that end, I’M IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW SOFA. And since Dennis and I both still have family and friends back in Delaware, I’d love it for the aforementioned new sofa to double as a bed for guests. (I hosted one of my best friends for about 10 days earlier this spring and I gotta say that the air mattress really lost its luster – I can’t put anyone through that again!) ANYWAY. I’ve spent the past couple of months researching – I will not make an uninformed sofa purchase again! – and today, I wanted to share the 22 design-forward sleeper sofa beds that I’ve considered for my own apartment. They’re all highly-rated, comfortable (both the “sleeper” part and the “sofa” part), and aesthetically appealing. I’ve also noted shipping times, for those of you looking for a quick addition to your home before the holidays, and I’ve called out the pieces that were made here in America (in case that’s important to you). Four Quick FAQs About Sleeper Sofa Beds
How long should a sleeper sofa bed last?
A LONG TIME. Look, you’re not going to use this as your everyday bed – most of these mattresses are around 5″ or 6″ thick, so they’re not built for daily use – but a modern sleeper sofa should last at least 5 years. Designers will also throw around the fact that sofas can last “up to 17 years,” but honestly, the pieces I’ve linked below are high-quality. They’re the ones that you’ll find in 50 years at the flea market. If you take care of them, they’ll take care of you.
Are any of them actually comfortable?
YES. I’ve done a lot of research – both in-person and via talking with experts – and both furniture and mattress technology have come A LONG WAY. (I mean, we can ship mattresses in boxes now – of course we can fit more comfortable beds into sofas.) This ain’t your grandma’s 1970s sleeper! The sofas really feel like sofas, too – not just like a cushion on top that’s been balanced atop a metal frame. If you’ve written off the sleeper, you might want to try one out at a local store to see how different they feel now!
Why are they so expensive?
OH MY GOSH. This is MY question, too. And to be clear, you can absolutely get a sleeper sofa for $300 – $700…it’s just not going to be the most comfortable, and it’s not going to stand the test of time. Honestly, a lot of the options below will require a hefty amount of planning and saving (at least for me – sofas are expensive!), but I’ll also be keeping an eye out for any and all of these styles on Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp. They’re expensive because they were made from high-quality materials by people who really know what they’re doing, you know? (But that also means these sofas will be just as good secondhand…so keep those eyes peeled when you’re trolling for finds on Facebook Marketplace! You might score a deal. :))
Why don’t my sheets fit right on my sleeper sofa bed?
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION. Huge PSA: oftentimes, a “queen-sized mattress” in a sleeper IS NOT A QUEEN-SIZED MATTRESS. Some quick numbers for you to keep in mind:
- A twin bed is 38″x75″.
- A full bed is 54″x75″.
- A queen bed is 60″x80″.
- A king bed is 76″ x 80″.
- And the most common “sleeper queen?” 60″x72″. That’s right: sleeper mattresses are often significantly shorter than TWIN SIZED BEDS. Just something to keep in mind!
I’ve highlighted bed sizes below – you’ll see true kings, queens, and fulls, alongside a selection of “sleeper queens” with more petite profiles. If your guest’s comfort is a priority (or if you come from a particularly tall family), be sure to check the actual dimensions – sleeper queens are totally fine for quick stays, but they may become frustrating after several weeks. No one loves their feet hanging off the edge of the bed for that long, you know? ANYWAY. You’ve officially been briefed – onwards to the picks!!!

These are great options. Here is one to add: the Oxford from Room and Board, which I just ordered (fingers crossed it is ready by November 14 as promised, because we need it for Thanksgiving!). It is customizable and reasonably priced, in the mid range of what you have here; also a pop-up style rather than the folded metal-supported sofa beds. It comes in queen and full, with two arm choices; I just double checked that the mattress is indeed 60 x 80. I love Room and Board. Wonder why I haven’t seen their products mentioned here, at least not that I can recall (longtime fan of the blog).
Agree, love Room and Board! I’ve had their Berin sleeper sofa for over two years and love it. The mattress is 77” long, so not quite the standard 80 but very close.
I came here specifically to make sure the Oxford was on the list — we’ve had ours for a year and it’s amazing! We gutted/dug out our basement and I hunted high and low for a sleeper sofa that would sleep like a real bed. My parents and in-laws visit regularly, are almost 80, and we live in a small house with no guest room, so this was a priority for me. The Oxford sectional is exactly what I hoped — every guest has told us that with a mattress pad, it’s super comfortable and feels exactly like a real bed. (And it’s a great sectional too — we regularly extend it to make it a “super couch” for maximum movie watching/video gaming/hanging out comfort.) We’ve owned several sleeper sofas and this one is far and away the best — for once we felt like we got what we paid for!
Room&Board would be a great addition to this round; such quality, so many selections, great design and US made. My Room&Board sectional & coffee table, going on 17yrs, still stand up design wise and structurally as comfortable as when first delivered. Having slept on friends’ R&B sleepers—they provided the best sleeper sleeps I’ve ever experienced!
I’ve also wondered why I never see Room and Board on here. And I also wonder why I do see Interior Define even though they never delivered thousands of orders last year. I have to guess that Room and Board doesn’t pay for affiliate links and the others do?
We bought the extra deep Jasper from Interior Define and love it! We can sprawl side by side with plenty of room and it’s doubled as a bed for extra guests – win win!

Congratulations on moving in together! So exciting and so fun! When my partner and I moved in together I had been happily living alone for many years. I really love living together for so many reasons but it was a harder transition than I predicted. Partly because I was leaving my very cute and spacious apartment and moving into his smaller and less charming place. But also because while I am a very social extrovert, I didn’t realize how important chill time alone at home was until I didn’t have it. So now we make sure I get that home alone time regularly and we are both much happier.
Not sure if this will apply to you but I’m sure some will come up that surprises you!
We have the Article one and our guests love it for sleeping but you need a sectional so you both can sprawl and that James one is calling your name I think!
My grandparents had a sleeper sofa from the 60s in their guest room (this was up until 3 years ago) – once some of the structural integrity gave out, my handy and thrifty grandpa threaded a metal pipe across the middle to keep the mattress horizontal. Though they had a modest home, it was only 2 blocks from the beach in San Diego, and while they were comfortably set in life and hosted all guests and paid for all meals, I always suspected the continuing presence of that ancient and uncomfortable sleeper sofa made sure no one took advantage of the guest room for too long.

Yes! The only people who use our sleeper are my in-laws. I like them but 3 days is long enough for visits. I’m afraid they’d stay weeks if we had a real guest room or a more comfortable sleeper, tee hee.
I’ve been down the sleeper sofa worm hole and lost many hours of my life to find the ‘right’ one. I even found the wrong one first and now have a basement sleeper sofa that is awful. The one I found that I love is the trundle sleeper sofas from Pottery Barn – the Pacifica, the Celeste, and the Sanford. They all come in an option with a chaise which is lovely. But more importantly, they aren’t a traditional trundle – the bottom part pops up to make a a bed that is fully supported and doesn’t sag whatsoever. I then have a 3″ foam mattress pad that I put on top when guests come. My 75 year old dad says it is more comfortable than his bed.

The most important lesson I have learned about buying a new sofa is to never ever buy one you can’t sit on first. It doesn’t matter if 3,000 reviews say it’s comfortable – your mileage may vary. We ordered from Room & Board after sitting on every sofa we were interested in within a 50-mile radius. lol That was four years ago and our sofa choice (the Morrison) is still perfect for us and still looks brand new despite a LOT of use. They have tons of fabric and cushion options so if you have one nearby, it’s worth a visit.

Just out of curiosity, why do people prefer sofa beds to air mattresses? I find air mattresses super comfortable and more convenient but am likely missing something.
It’s a few reasons for me: 1) They seem super cold all night. 2) They almost always deflate, especially b/c I usually share it with my husband, who weighs 100 lbs more than I do, and 3) We’re always uneven – I’m up about 3-4 inches higher (see weight difference, above), so I’m constantly rolling into him during the night. And finally, you hit an age where you want to be higher off the ground (can’t believe I’m about there but here we are).
You should check out Cococo Home also. Hand made to order in NC. I love my Clark leather sofa and almost every sofa they make can be a sleeper.

I have the Willow II slipcovered sleeper from Crate and Barrel and am happy with it! I give it a B+. The back cushions are super squishy but the bench seat is slightly more firm than I would like, just for my preference which is basically to fall into my couch and not be able to get out. The mattress has been slept on once and I think it was OK – but would benefit from a foam topper. Overall, though, the whole couch feels very sturdy and the cover is easy to get off and on. And the canvas fabric options is surprisingly soft while still feeling very substantial. I would buy again.
A word of warning re: sofa beds. I too was very fixated on ensuring ours was comfortable as a bed and really focused on that when making purchasing decisions. However, while the one we got is great as a bed, it is less great as a sofa. In fact, it is so uncomfortable for daily usage, that we are thinking of just getting a regular sofa and an air mattress for the occasions when we need it for spillover guests. I don’t live in North America, so it’s possible that options are better there, but if it’s a sofa you’re going to use everyday, you might not want to sacrifice your comfort for that of guests if it comes down to a trade-off between them. It’s possible that sofa beds in the USA get the balance better than they do here in the UK (i.e. very comfortable as both a bed and a couch) but it’s something to consider.
We have had the opposite experience: our 20 year old Thomasville sleeper is by far the most comfortable sofa we own/have owned. P.S. today’s “Thomasville” is not the same company, same name but not the same quality (RIP Thomasville).

I would love a review of Comfort Works! We are thinking of getting a slipcover for an Ikea sectional and curious if it’s worth it to go with Comfort Works…it was more expensive than I expected!
I don’t have a ton of ikea furniture, but I swear by my ikea sleeper sofa. It’s 10 years old and its outlasted a much nicer CB2 sofa. My kids jump on it everyday. I’ve order 3 new slip covers over the years to keep it going. So if you’re looking for something affordable and fairly indestructible I’m a huge fan.
I have the sherwood (not as a sleeper) in our media room and I can confirm it is THE MOST COMFORTABLE SOFA EVER MADE. ever. period. full stop. 10/10

Congrats on the big move-in, Caitlin! My suggestions for successful cohabitation include setting ground rules up front. Decide who does what chores. The specifics can be renegotiated later if needed, but if you don’t set up some system right away, it’s harder to get both people to do their share down the line. Also, be sure to split bills equitably, based on percentage of income (but I’m sure you’re on top of that already!). Such a timely post. I recently bought a Marin sofa sleeper from West Elm’s open box site. It was a little scary not knowing what might be wrong with it, but the prospect of saving $800 or so was impossible to resist. It turned out the sofa was in good shape but quite dirty. Fortunately, Folex came through for me and it cleaned up beautifully. The sofa is gorgeous and quite comfortable. We put it in our media room / guest room, and it’s become my favorite spot in the house. We haven’t slept on the bed yet, but I tried it out in a West Elm store and it was very comfortable. The first one! I looked through your entire list, but that was my favorite. Lots of room for lounging AND a sleeper.
I am curious if anyone actually sits on their sofa. There was a roundup of sofas in the past and all were too deep to sit on and everyone was sitting on the sofa sideways. I have a sofa bed because I wanted a firm mattress but have never pulled it out for anyone to sleep on because they prefer to sleep on it without pulling it out. I also cannot imagine buying a sofa without testing it first especially at the high price point.
On the topic of sofas… can we get an update on Emily’s Lawson Fenning Moreno sofa? Is it in the farmhouse? Is it comfortable? Holding up well? We’re in the market for a sectional and are looking at LF, but we’re not local so can’t see them in person.
I got the West Elm Haven sleeper sofa because I only wanted to order a sofa whose bed I could test out in person. Delivery was a NIGHTMARE. No communication, endless months of delays, rude customer service (and I have two other friends that have had similar recent experiences with West Elm). And when it finally arrived, the bed itself was super uncomfortable. They must have added a feather bed to the top of the one in store. So now, in addition to what I spent on the sofa, I had to spend an additional $350 for a support board and a new mattress. Which is to say DON’T BUY YOUR SLEEPER SOFA FROM WEST ELM.
I have however slept on and loved the Room + Board sleeper sofas. And having owned one of their sofas myself in the past, can attest to how well made and comfortable they are. I shouldn’t have tried to save money with my West Elm purchase and should have invested in a Clad Home or Room + Board sofa. Lesson learned.

Haha – I so agree with your comment! I’ve not had good luck with their sofas. Love the look, but the comfort is just not there. I’ve been using Room & Board for clients A LOT lately – hard to beat the quality/service/delivery times. I wish I had started using them sooner!
As a side note to the team – it’s really hard to comment on here with the ads getting in the way every time. I completely understand the need to have them to support your incredible team, but they make it super difficult to comment. 😅
Pro tip: whether it is a sofa bed or an air mattress, use a 3-in foam topper. On sofa beds it gives you that extra couple of inches, makes the sheets fit better, and smooths out and protects the mattress. On air beds, it blocks the cold, and stabilizes the mattress a bit. I am forever hosting people, and this tip has served me well.
I want a topper for my sofa bed mattress, but I NEED TO KNOW – do you keep it on the mattress at all times and fold it up inside the sofa when not being used, or do you need to store it separately? My 1950’s house is sorely lacking on closet space…
I love our sleeper sofa by American Leather. Full size queen mattress. I needed something that my 6′ 1′ son would fit on. It’s a great sofa as well. The local company we bought it from took it apart to to deliver it to our condo and reassembled it quickly once inside. American made. We’ve had ours for 10 years and it has held up beautifully. They go on sale once a year every fall.

I have an older sleeper sofa that is still in good shape, but the mattress is lacking. Can you order a regular memory foam mattress or a replacement mattress without buying an entire new sofa? Has anyone tried that?

Adding a pillow top makes almost any sleeper sofa more comfy.
I’ve had the Joybird Hughes sleeper (https://joybird.com/sleeper-sofas/hughes-sleeper-sofa) for 5 years now and I don’t really ever see an end in sight for it! It’s a comfortable sofa and also a really great sleeper — I’ve slept on it a few times and my friends have had rave reviews too.
